How to Do Radon Testing

Radon may be the most insidious air pollutant that can find its way into your home. The American Lung Association cites radon as the leading cause of lung cancer in nonsmokers. Radon, a naturally occurring radioactive gas, finds its way into your home by seeping its way up through the earth's crust. There are many proven ways to rid your home of radon, but because radon is colorless and odorless, first you have to find it. Here are the steps to take to do radon testing.

1. Perform the radon testing yourself. Most home improvement stores offer inexpensive radon test kits or you can find them online. Test kits come in two durations: long-term test kits that are accurate but take at least a few months to get results, and short-term test kits that are less accurate but can be done in a few days. Whichever you choose, follow the directions on the kit carefully so that the results of the radon test will not be contaminated.

2. Hire a professional to do the radon testing. If you are located in a county that is known to have higher levels of radon, then you may opt to have a professional perform the radon test. Though more expensive, the equipment used is far more sensitive and accurate than store bought radon tests.

3. Radon testing is not a one time deal. Remember to do radon testing whenever there is significant work done in or around your house such as installing a new patio or expanding your home. Anything that can cause a greater release of radon gas into your foundation warrants further radon testing.
