The first step is to see what age is the child, age 18 is an adult but may not be emancipated. Why? If a child has special needs or mental health issues they may not be emancipated at all and need a guardian as an adult.

If a child drops out of high school and is working they are usually emancipated, may it be age 16.

If a child joins the military they are along with getting married. If a child is 20-22 and still in college full-time they are not emancipated and still dependent on a parent to support them If they go to college part-time and work they are usually emancipated. There is case law on this issue and every case is different depending on the child.
emancipation means that the child is respondsible for themselves and can support themself.
If there is a question in regards to child support cases the court can always make a ruling on the matter.
