They can scratch up outdoor furniture or cause a startle if you run into one during the night, and they are notorious for causing a mess with trash. The raccoons will knock over garbage cans, knock off the lids and enjoy a midnight snack. Then you wake up and the trash is scattered over the lawn. - Scented trash bags
- Bungee cord
- Several milk crates
- Waterproof tarp
- Rope

Purchase scented trash bags to throw away your garbage in. This is the first step in preventing raccoons from knocking over your cans and eating the trash. The scented bags will usually repel raccoons.

Fix the lid securely onto the trash can. Always use a lid to protect the garbage from raccoons.

Attach one end of a bungee cord to one handle of the trash can.

Pull the bungee cord over the lid of the can and attach it to the other handle on the opposite side. Make sure you have a small bungee cord so the lid stays on tightly under the cord.

Get the garbage cans off of the ground. Milk crates are a good choice to place the cans on. The raccoons are less likely to try and get into your cans if they have to struggle to reach them.

Place a waterproof tarp over the cans and fasten the tarp with a rope.
