How to Dye a Rug White

It can be difficult finding the right rug in the right shade of white. Instead of searching every home store in your area, try dyeing an old rug for a new look. You can purchase dye from any crafts store, but always start with a rug that's a light or faded yellow or off-white to achieve a bright white in the end.

Instructions

    • 1

Fill your washing machine with enough hot water so there is room for the rug to move easily in the water.

    • 2

Pour all the packets of dye powder and 8 cups of hot water into a large bucket to dissolve the powder. Add the liquid dye to the washing machine.

    • 3

Soak the rug in hot water before dyeing it in the washer. When thoroughly soaked, place it in the washing machine.

    • 4

Set the washing machine cycle for an extended wash. Dye the rug in the wash for at least 30 minutes before the rinse cycle starts.

    • 5

Remove the rug from the washer when the time is up and run under warm water. After several minutes turn the water to cool. When the water runs clear, the rug is finished.

    • 6

      Hang the rug to dry.

    • 7

Clean out the washer when finished to avoid staining. Fill the machine with hot water and add regular detergent and bleach. Run the machine for a complete cycle.

Tips & Warnings

  • This process will work only with rugs without rubber backing.
