How to Compress a File Into JPEG or GIF Format
JPEG and GIF are lossy image formats that are capable of very high levels of compression. Images converted into either of the two formats will lose some of their quality (particularly with GIFs, which only support a maximum of 256 colors per image), but will gain the benefit of a much smaller file size. If you have images in an uncompressed format, such as BMP or TIFF, you might try compressing them---and you can easily do it using only free, online tools.

1
Open your web browser and direct it to Go2convert.com; a website capable of converting many different image types. Other, similar sites exist (see the resources section of this article).
-
2
Click the "Browse" button and select the image you want to compress in the file manager dialog that opens.

3
Open the drop-down box containing the list of file formats. Select either JPEG or GIF, depending on which format you wish to convert to. You can try both formats and compare the results to determine which you prefer.

4
Check the box next to "Resize image?" if you want to change the size of your outputted image. The site provides a list of recommended sizes, convenient for online use. You have the option to enter your email address in the text field if you want the compressed image mailed to you.

5
Click "Convert and download." The website will process your image and then display it to you in a new window. Right-click on the image and select "Save as" to keep it.
-
6
Compare the file size of your new JPEG or GIF to that of the original image. It should be considerably smaller, though the quality of the image may also be slightly reduced.
