How to Create Bedroom Slippers

In cold weather, there is nothing more warm and comforting than a pair of warm slippers. Instead of buying bedroom slippers, you can easily make your own slippers out of an old sweater. Making bedroom slippers is not only a fun craft, but also a great way to recycle old clothing that you no longer wear.

Things You'll Need

  • 2 to 4 sheets of paper
  • Pencil or pen
  • Sweater
  • Scissors
  • Straight pins
  • Needle

Instructions

    • 1

Place a piece of paper flat on the floor with your foot on top of the paper. Use a pencil to trace around your foot completely. Once you have traced around your foot, even out the line around your toes, making it a slightly curved line.

    • 2

Draw a smaller oval inside the outline of your foot. This will be where your foot will enter the slipper and should look similar to a Mary Jane style shoe. Look at a pair of slippers you already own if you are having trouble making the opening. Remember, the material will stretch, so that opening doesn't have to be huge.

    • 3

Measure out ¼ inch from the slipper outline and draw a dotted line completely around the edge of the slipper outline so that you will have some room to sew. However, if your sweater is a more stretchy material, do not add this extra allowance because then the slippers will be too big for your feet.

    • 4

Place another sheet of paper underneath the paper on which you traced your foot. Make sure the papers are even, and then cut out the pattern through both sheets of paper. Cut the circle opening out of the top sheet of paper. Pin both of the cutout foot patterns to an old sweater and cut them out. Make sure to cut out the opening in the first traced pattern.

    • 5

Sew the two sweater pieces together, aligning the right insoles. Sew around the two pieces ¼ inch from the edge. If using a sewing machine, try using a 2mm by 2mm zigzag stitch. Fold over the ¼ inch edge, and create another 7mm wide by 2mm long zigzag stitch to reinforce the edge and prevent fraying.

    • 6

Use a crocheting needle or needle and thread to create another stitch around the inside opening of the slipper to give it a finished look. Place the slipper on your foot, and measure the opening. Cut a small strip of fabric from the sweater to match your measurement, and sew the strap across the opening where it feels most comfortable.
