How to Know If You Have 32-Bit Windows XP

The Microsoft Windows XP operating system comes in two versions: 32-bit and 64-bit. The difference between them is the way the processor handles information. To put it in simple terms, 64-bit systems are faster and can handle more data more efficiently. If you are unaware of which version (32-bit or 64-bit) of Windows XP you have, you can determine it quite easily.

Instructions

    • 1

Open Windows XP "System Information." To do this, click on "Start > Run," type in "msinfo32.exe" and press "OK" (or hit "Enter"). The "System Information" window will now open on the screen.

    • 2

Scan down the right pane of the window until you reach the "System Type" list item. This should be the seventh listing from the top, underneath "System Model."

    • 3

Look to the right of the list item name. If your Windows XP version is 32-bit, the value will be "X86-based PC." If your Windows XP version is 64-bit, the value will be "X64-based PC."
