How to Buy Farm Equipment

Farm equipment is any type of machinery used in farming. Factors in buying equipment include the type of farm you have, what crops or animals you raise, where your farm is located, and the amount of money you want to spend. Also consider whether you want new or used equipment.

    • 1

Check your local phone book for farm equipment dealers in your area. Contact the store manager to find out what type of equipment the store carries and make sure it is what you're looking for. For example, some equipment dealers may carry only basic items such as tractors while you may be looking for dairy equipment. Ask about the warranties on the equipment as well as the prices. And find out if delivery is free and if the dealer takes old equipment in trade.

    • 2

Check your newspaper's classified section for used farm equipment for sale. Also look for auction announcements and read the list of things to be auctioned. The newspaper also may have ads for sales that equipment companies and stores are having. Search the Internet for equipment dealers, too. The dealers will have websites detailing available equipment as well as prices, contact information, and delivery fees.

Visit your local feed stores. They often will have bulletin boards where customers have posted fliers offering machinery or animals for sale. You can place an equipment-wanted flier on the board. Also ask the store owner or manager for the names of any customers looking to sell equipment.
