How to Apply for a Job in Physical Education
Physical education jobs are available in elementary, middle and high schools, both private and public. PE represents a fun, relaxed period compared to core subjects such as math, history, science and English. Students participate in activities like soccer, basketball, golf and tennis without dealing with textbooks and homework assignments. Besides instructing PE classes, many teachers also serve as coaches for school teams like track, volleyball and football.

1
Complete a bachelor's degree. Although state requirements vary, PE teachers often must earn at least an undergraduate education. However, you do not necessarily need to major in education, especially if you have a background in PE, kinesiology, or health and wellness.
-
2
Participate in an internship or student-teaching opportunity at a local school. Although you may not be compensated, the experience will be invaluable. You can interact with students and gauge whether you prefer to work at an elementary, middle or high school.

3
Gather as much experience as possible (certification, interests, hobbies). Pass a National Board Assessment. Teach classes, such as CPR, dance, aerobics, tennis or golf at a gym or local community college. Coach a youth football or soccer team.
-
4
Search for available jobs. Many schools hire PE teachers before the academic year begins. If no current positions exist, consider applying for a job as a substitute teacher.
-
5
Submit an application and prepare for the interview. Many schools require official transcripts to verify college courses and professional references. Questions that you may face during the interview include describing an effective PE teacher and how you would help students increase their awareness about physical fitness.
