How to Write Wedding & Birth Announcements
Wedding and birth announcements are great ways to inform family, friends and colleagues of exciting news in your life. Most announcements are worded simply and provide a brief overview of your wedding or birth on a customized announcement card. Announcements should be sent out as soon as possible following the event.

To send wedding and birth announcements in a timely fashion, it is best to prepare them before the wedding or birth actually takes place. This is easy for wedding announcements, as all of the major details will already be ironed out in advance. For birth announcements you can add extra details, such as the birth date, after the fact.

2
Compile all of the information you want to include in the wedding or birth announcement. Wedding announcements typically include the names of both the bride and the groom, the date of the wedding, and often the names of the bride's and groom's parents (especially if the parents hosted the wedding). Baby announcements should include the names of both parents, the new baby's name, date of birth and details concerning the birth, such as the baby's length, weight and the time and date of birth. Names of the proud grandparents can also be included.

Decide how you would like to word the announcement. Traditional wedding announcements are formal, and can be worded similarly to wedding invitations. The parents of the bride often announce the marriage in formal announcements; for example, a traditional announcement might read Mr. and Mrs. John Smith announce the marriage of their daughter Celia Smith to Mr. Michael Stanton. Traditional baby announcements often open with a short poem or phrase, then list the baby's first and middle names (or the full name), birth details (length, weight and birth date), followed by the names of parents, siblings and grandparents.

Unlike traditional announcements, in nontraditional wedding announcements, the marriage can be announced by the newlyweds or by both the bride's and groom's parents. Feel free to add other details concerning the marriage, such as the date and location of the wedding and reception, honeymoon details and maybe even post-wedding plans or a photo from the wedding. Be careful, however, not to offend those receiving the announcement who may not have been invited to the wedding. Nontraditional baby announcements can include more intimate details from the birth, including the time and location of the birth, and a picture.

Hand-written notes can be a nice way to add a personal touch to wedding or birth announcements; however, they are not necessary or expected.

The wording used in wedding and birth announcements can also be used for submitting wedding and birth announcements to your local newspaper. Just make sure to include all the important details, as well as your contact information, so that the editor can contact you if there are any questions. Also remember that submitted photographs may not be returned.
