How to Hook Up 2 Receivers to 1 HD DirecTV Dish

DirecTV satellite television service uses an outdoor signal dish connected with coaxial cable to an indoor receiver that processes the signal for an attached television. Connecting two DirecTV receivers to one satellite dish lets people watch programs on televisions in different rooms. The satellite dish must be dual LNB (low noise block) or dual LNC (low noise converter), which means the dish is capable of processing two separate signals. A component known as a multi-switch is also needed to convert the single coaxial cable from the satellite dish into two jacks, each of which can be connected to a cable for a separate receiver.

Instructions

    • 1

Check the back of the DirecTV dish to verify it is Dual LNB or Dual LNC. DirecTV high definition satellite service is designed for multi-room expansion, so if the dish is HD, it should also be Dual LNB or LNC and capable of delivering television signals to different rooms.

    • 2

Connect the coaxial cable going into the building from the satellite dish to the Coax IN or LNC IN jack on a multi-switch, available at electronics stores. The cable attaches with a coupler turned clockwise on the external threads of the multi-switch jack and tightened by hand.

    • 3

Attach a coaxial cable to each of the coax OUT jacks on the opposite side of the multi-switch. The Out jacks may also be labeled RX1 and RX2.

    • 4

Route each cable to the back of a receiver and connect the coupler to the RF IN or Coax IN jack on the back of the receiver.

Tips & Warnings

  • DirecTV manufactures satellite dishes that can be combined with four-jack multi-switches for connecting televisions and receivers in up to four rooms. Subscription charges vary for the increased service.

  • Wait until the coaxial cables are connected from the dish to the multi-switch and each receiver before plugging the power cords on the receivers into a wall outlet.
