How to Compress an MP3 File

Sometimes you need just a tiny bit more space in order to fit your MP3 track into an email attachment, or onto a CD or thumb drive. One method to accomplish this is to compress the MP3 file into an archive format such as RAR or ZIP. You can make this happen with free archive software you can download online.

Instructions

    • 1

Visit a website where you can get an archive program and pick up a freeware version of something like WinRAR or WinZip. Click on the download link at the website you select to get the installation package.

    • 2

Double-click on the package once it downloads. Click "Next" through each step until the program installs.

    • 3

Right-click on your MP3 file in the folder where it currently is, which could be "My Music."

    • 4

Select "Add to archive." A new screen will appear. Click "OK" and the program will compress your music file into the RAR or ZIP format.
