Windows XP is an operating system released in 2001 by Microsoft. One of the antipiracy features of the software is that it must be activated and the product key must be authenticated in order for it to continue working. If you are planning to reinstall your copy of Windows XP, you will need to have the correct product activation key in order to use it. If you no longer have the original paperwork containing the key, you can retrieve it from your current installation of Windows XP.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

    Click on your "Start" button.

  2. Step 2

Right-click on "My Computer" and select "Properties."

  3. Step 3

Select the "General" tab. The authentication code will be located in the center of the dialog box.

Tips & Warnings
  • The Windows authentication code may also be included on a sticker on your computer case. If you have the original discs that came with your computer, it is often located on the disc sleeve or directly on the installation disc.
