How to Convert VGA Output to S-Video Input

Today's televisions offer an array of video input options which can be used to connect several different peripherals. One of the things you can add to a modern TV which could not be added to an older TV is a computer. While a computer generally has a VGA (Video Graphics Array) output, which may not be found on a TV, there is a way to connect the VGA to an S-video input so that your television can act as a monitor.

Things You'll Need

  • Computer with a VGA output
  • VGA cable
  • VGA to S-video converter box
  • S-video cable
  • Television with an S-video input

Instructions

    • 1

Place the computer near the television. Make sure there is power to the computer, and the keyboard and mouse are already hooked up. Turn the computer on.

    • 2

Place the VGA cable into the VGA monitor output in the back of the computer. Place the other end of the VGA cable into the VGA input on the converter box.

    • 3

Place the S-video cable into the S-video output in the converter box. Plug the other end of the cable into the S-video input in the television.

    • 4

Plug the converter box into its power source. This can either be a normal two- or three-prong plug which goes into a wall socket, or it may plug into the computer via a USB port. Turn the converter box on to make sure it has power.

    • 5

Turn on your television and follow your instruction manual to display the S-video input. The television should now act as the computer monitor.

Tips & Warnings

  • When doing this, try to keep the computer and the television as close as possible to avoid having wires running all over the place. This will help keep the area clean and neat.

  • You may be tempted to purchase a cable with a VGA output on one end and an S-video cable on the other. While this will hook the computer and the television together, there is nothing which will be able to convert the signal. If you do this, you may not get a picture.
