How to Remove Permanent Marker From Blonde Hair

A marker is a type of pen that is designed for colorful, bold marks on an object. A permanent marker is simply a type of pen that makes these colorful, bold marks permanent. Permanent markers are used for many things, including poster making, labeling and crafts. However, permanent markers have also made their way into the beauty world. Some people use them to draw their own eyebrows, darken eyelashes and even color their hair. Once the hair has been colored with one of these markers, it can be a bit of a challenge to remove, especially from blonde hair because it is more porous than most other hair colors. Instructions

Wash the hair with a clarifying shampoo. Rinse and repeat two to three times. A clarifying shampoo contains chemicals that are made to strip any build-up from the hair. This also works to remove some hair-coloring products; however, clarifying shampoos also can damage the hair, causing it to become dry and brittle.

Purchase a Malibu treatment from a local beauty supply store. Mix the treatment according to instructions and apply to the hair. Leave the treatment on the hair for the recommended amount of time, usually around 15 minutes. Rinse the Malibu treatment from the hair and apply a leave-in conditioner. A Malibu treatment is designed to remove mineral build-up from the hair, but it also works to remove color from hair as well. Many beauty professionals use Malibu treatments prior to coloring clients' hair to help get rid of any existing color left over from prior coloring services.

Wet a clean cloth with hairspray and wipe the hair by pinching the hair in between the cloth. Wipe until the color is removed. You may have to rewet the cloth with hairspray a few times.

Tips & Warnings

  • Apply fingernail polish remover, containing acetone, to the pieces of hair that have been colored by permanent marker. Do not apply polish remover to the whole head.
