How to Telnet Into an HP Printer

For network printers, HP provides a network card that maps to an IP address. Users send print jobs directly to the printer using this IP address. You can also telnet to the printer using this IP address. Telnet is a small application that allows you to run configuration options on the machine. This is beneficial for network administrators who need to configure the printer remotely in another office or building. Telnet is an application included with enterprise versions of Windows.

Instructions

    • 1

Click the Windows Start button and select "Run." In the text box, enter "telnet <IP address>". Replace the "<IP address>" with the IP of the HP printer.

    • 2

Enter a user name and password for the telnet session. If this is a new setup, it is blank. You can set a user name and password to protect the machine from unauthorized telnet access. Enter "passwd: <password>" to set a password on the telnet session after you've logged in for the first time.

    • 3

Set the printer to log print jobs and errors. You can set the HP printer to store any messages to a text file on a local network computer. To set these configurations, enter the following commands:

      syslog-config: 1
      syslog-svr: <local computer's IP address>
      set-cmnty-name: <printer's SNMP password>

The SNMP password is a separate password from the main telnet session. Replace "<local computer's IP address>" with the IP for the computer that stores the system logs.

    • 4

Type "ip <new_ip_address>" to change the IP for the HP printer. Once you change the IP address, you need to take note of the change to telnet to the printer a second time.

    • 5

Close the telnet window and send a test print. This ensures that you've configured the settings properly and the IP address is found by the local network machines.
