How to Rate Word Recognition Software

Installing OCR or word recognition software on your computer can be a great time saver. When you have a good word recognition software package on your computer, you can simply scan a stack of documents, run those documents through the OCR process and end up with a finished word processing document. Of course not all word recognition software packages are created equal, and you want to make sure you choose a package with a high success rate. An inferior package will waste time and money as you will have to correct errors later.

Instructions

    • 1

Create a test document that you will use for testing each of the word recognition packages you are considering. When preparing the test document, be sure to use a number of different fonts, and use a combination of capital letters, lower case letters and special characters.

    • 2

Misspell several words as you create your document. When you are testing the word recognition software, you want to make sure the package faithfully recreates what is on the paper, even if the words are not spelled correctly.

    • 3

Print out your test document, scan it and run it through each of the word recognition software packages you are considering. Go through the original document and the document that has gone through the recognition process, comparing each of the words as you read.

    • 4

Circle any words or letters that were missed or misinterpreted by the word recognition software package. Write the name of the software package at the top of each page and then examine the results to see which package did the best job.
