Sell items from your local Big Lots!

Big Lots is a big box store filled with overstock and closeout name brand items. They sell name brands such as Fitz and Floyd, Cuinsinart and Mr. Christmas. Some of these items have had previous lives on other department store shelves or due to space limitations; they never left the stock room. Some were vendor overstock items or they changed the packaging. All of these end up at your local Big Lots store at a considerable discount. Big Lots also manufacturers their own versions of products but you are going to look for only name brand items.

Instructions

    • 1

Visit your local Big Lots store and walk the aisles soaking in the vast amount and wide variety of goods they sell. Don't linger over any one item, rather just peruse the aisles to get an idea of what they carry.

    • 2

Grab a cart and go shopping. Was there any one thing or aisle that really caught your eye? Are you a self proclaimed expert at something like cooking gadgets, gardening or home décor? Head for that aisle.

    • 3

What catches your eye? Look for name brands or hot items. Did you just read an article in a cooking magazine about pizza stones being a hot item this year? Do you see any on the shelf? Is it a name brand? Open the box and look at it. Does it seem well made? Is it chipped or cracked? Are the instructions still in the box? Is the box in good condition?

    • 4

Are you getting a good feeling about the item? Do you think it might sell on Ebay? Then it is time to buy it! Buy the item but make sure you hang onto the receipt in case you need to return it. Big Lots requires a receipt for all returns.

    • 5

Now it is time to really do some research on your item. Get on your computer and bring up Ebay's website. Type the name of your item into the search field. Does it come up? Do any of them have bids right now?

    • 6

Click on completed searches for final selling prices. Refine the search with the "highest price" option. What is the highest price your item sold for? Now skim to the bottom of the page or listings and check for the lowest price. Your item will probably sell for a price some where in the middle.

    • 7

Now check the price you paid for it against the selling price. Can you make a profit? Make sure you take into account Ebay and Paypal selling fees. Can you still make a profit?

    • 8

If you can still make a profit then congrats, you found a winner! List it and reap the rewards!

Tips & Warnings

  • Can't afford to buy upfront? Then bring a pen and notepad and write down the details of your potential Ebay items and do research at home before buying.

  • Take seasonality into account! Buy Christmas in August while you have a few months to sell it. Don't worry if it doesn't sell by Christmas as Ebay shoppers buy holiday items year round.

  • Always buy the items before listing them on Ebay. What if they sell out before your listing ends?

  • Don't buy items with an expiration date as you may be stuck with them.

  • Never tell employees or other customers why you are really buying 6 huge Fitz and Floyd rooster statues! Just say you are getting an early start on your Christmas shopping. Why tell others your secret source?
