How to Remove a Toyota Corolla Engine Cover

Since 2003, all Toyota Corollas have come from the factory with an engine cover (sometimes called an engine dampener). The plastic engine cover serves two purposes: to make the engine bay look cleaner and to reduce interior noise from the engine bay. The back side of the cover contains a sound deadener. Removing the engine cover in 2003 to 2008 models requires basic tools; in 2009 and 2010 models, no tools are required.

Things You'll Need

• Pliers or socket wrench
• Flathead screwdriver

Instructions

1. Turn your engine off and let it cool down for a few minutes. Open your hood and support it using the prop.

2. Remove the four nuts from the plastic engine cover using a pair of pliers or a small socket wrench.

3. Remove the rivets behind the nuts. Gently pry them up using a flathead screwdriver. Keep the nuts and rivets in a cup or bag to avoid losing them.

4. Grasp the sides of the engine cover; lift it straight up to remove it, and then set it down.

5. Reinstall the engine cover by setting it in place, and then reattach the rivets and nuts.

Tips & Warnings

• The 2009 to 2010 Toyota Corolla uses a slightly different setup. To remove the cover, simply grasp it and lift it up (it attaches with clips, not rivets or nuts).
