How to Dress for High Tea Parties for Girls

High tea is a British tradition that dates back to the Victorian era. This traditional tea started as a substantial evening meal eaten by working class families after working all day at difficult jobs. High tea usually involved numerous courses including soup, meat, cheese, eggs, bread and a dessert. The name "high tea" comes from the traditional high table upon which the hostess arranges the food. When girls attend a high tea party, help them to learn how to dress appropriately.

Instructions

    • 1

Note the time of the high tea party. If the tea party is in the middle of the afternoon up to approximately 5:00 pm, this will likely be a light tea party with light food and casual dress. If the tea party is after 5:30 pm, this will likely be a high tea party with a substantial meal and slightly more formal dress.

    • 2

Wear a comfortable and attractive dress in light solid colors or prints. Ruffles and lace around the sleeves and bottom hem would be suitable. Add a bolero jacket or sweater over the dress as an additional layer that will add color and interest.

    • 3

Choose anklet socks with a lace edging or light colored tights. Wear ballerina flats that will instantly add a pretty flair to any girl's outfit. Often ballerina flats have bows or sequins as added decoration and this would be ideal.

    • 4

Finish the outfit with a small hat sporting a small flower and a tiny handbag in a coordinating color.

Tips & Warnings

  • If the tea party is in the middle of the afternoon and is a more casual affair, consider omitting the hat and purse. These accessories would be more suitable for a high tea party.
