How to Convert Sic Code to Naics Code

In 1997, the North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) was developed and adopted to replace the Standard Industry Classification (SIC) System. Converting a SIC code into the appropriate NAICS code is easily done by using various NAICS reference files and tools. You can order a printed or digital copy of the entire list from the National Technical Information Service or convert your SIC code online by accessing the current statistics for your industry.

Instructions

    • 1

Access the United States Department of Labor's SIC Division Structure webpage (see References below) and verify your four-digit SIC code by locating your industry division, major group and industry group. For example: a heating and air contractor would click on division C, major group 17 and locate a SIC code of 1711.

    • 2

Go to the NAICS Association website and enter your SIC code in the SIC code search box. Click "SIC search" to find the corresponding NAICS code.

    • 3

Read the resulting SIC descriptions and select the NAICS title and code that matches your industry.

Tips & Warnings

  • Anyone in the insurance industry or anyone completing multiple business reports may benefit from ordering printed materials, which are available on the NTIS website.

  • If you have any questions when reviewing the NAICS titles and descriptions, contact your insurance carrier for assistance.
