Furthermore, if they ingest the oil while trying to clean their feathers they can get sick or even die of poisoning. It's essential to clean motor oil off a bird as quickly as possible. - Dawn dish soap
- Warm water
- Pail
- Sponge or wash cloth
- Pet warmer, heat lamp or heat pad
- Towels
- Cage
- Bird food

Mix up Dawn liquid dish washing soap and warm water. Start washing the birds' feathers with a sponge or cloth.

If there is oil near their eyes, take a very soft tooth brush and gently scrub around the eyes.

Towel dry the birds. It's not enough to wash the oil off; the feathers must be thoroughly dried.

Place the birds in a cage with a pet warmer in it or a heat pad wrapped in a towel. Even a light bulb will add heat for the birds, but make sure the birds can't get close enough to it to be burned.

Cover the cage with towels. Blocking their visual contact with humans lowers the birds' stress levels.
