1
Map out your garden. Determine which areas of the garden you want to be covered by the automatic watering system. Note the heights of the plants, the amount of water each area requires and the distances of the various areas relative to the water source.
-
2
Do the math. Calculate the length of hose and tubing for each area, how many and what types of connectors and how many and what types of emitters you will need for the system.
-
-
3
Install the system. Cut the tubing to size. Attach the connectors for the hose and tubing. Connect the feeder tubes to the emitters, and keep the emitters in place by attaching them to stakes.
-
4
Attach the system to a timer. Set the automatic water timer to come on at designated times of the day and to stay on for a designated length of time.
-
5
Open the faucet. Keep the faucet open and let the timer do the regular watering for you.

For small container gardens that need to be watered automatically while you are away on vacation, consider purchasing a timer-controlled watering device that holds several gallons of water. I have developed a way to build your own automatic plant-watering system for potted plants for next-to-nothing-20 cents or less and it uses materials you probably already have in your own home (i.e. plastic soda bottles.) Go to w w w dot kahnlandscaping dot com. Too bad I can't post pictures here.
