How to Disconnect OnStar

General Motors' OnStar service, while very useful at times, raises some privacy issues. OnStar's GPS device can tell where and when you traveled, the speed of your car, when you pressed your brakes and whether your airbags went off, among many other things. OnStar can also record your voice and at times listen in on conversations occurring in the car. If you don't subscribe to OnStar, you'll likely want to disconnect the OnStar module from your car for added security---an easy task that will only take a few minutes.

Instructions

1. Open your trunk. Remove the tub cover from the center of the trunk's floor.

2. Remove the trunk sill plate. To do this, unscrew the four cargo-net connectors that are closest to the rear end of the car---two of which are attached to the sill plate itself. Pull the plate up and out.

3. Remove all cargo connectors on the right side of the trunk. Pull the right-side panel loose, being sure to keep it from getting caught on the connector-stud on the right-hand side of the trunk's floor. The OnStar module is located behind this side panel.

4. Unplug the module from the three wires that connect it to the car. Unscrew the module from the side of the trunk and remove it.

5. Replace the panel, sill plate, cargo-net connectors and tub cover.
