How to Refinish Teak Furniture Indoors

Teak furniture will last a lifetime, but if it's not cleaned and oiled regularly, it will turn a weathered gray, losing the beautiful golden glow that teak is famous for. Although weathered teak may not look beautiful, the strength of the teak is not harmed by exposure to the elements. But if you want it to look new again, you can refinish your teak furniture indoors with simple ingredients. Does this Spark an idea?

  • Bucket
  • Rubber gloves

Instructions

    • 1

Find a well-ventilated area indoors to restore your teak furniture. Open windows so the fumes from the bleach and teak oil are not overpowering. Lay a plastic drop cloth (available at any painting or hardware store) on the floor beneath the furniture. Put on rubber gloves.

    • 2

In a large bucket, combine three cups of low-phosphate laundry detergent with one cup of household bleach. Dip your scrub brush into the solution and mix well.

    • 3

Apply the cleaning solution to the teak furniture and scrub with heavy pressure in a circular motion. Clean the entire piece. When the furniture has been cleaned, dispose of any remaining cleaning solution and fill your bucket with clean water.

    • 4

Dip a clean, lint-free rag into the water and wipe the teak furniture down with the rag. Dip the rag in the water often, using generous amounts of water. Rinse the bucket out and fill it with clean water if the water in the bucket becomes cloudy.

    • 5

Allow the teak furniture to dry completely. This may take three days or more, depending on the dampness of your work area.

    • 6

Shake your can of teak oil up and down to mix it thoroughly. Apply teak oil to the entire piece of furniture with a paintbrush and allow to dry. Repeat the teak oil application twice, wiping any excess oil with a clean, dry, lint-free rag. Allow the furniture to dry overnight before using.

Tips & Warnings

  • Apply teak oil to your furniture every three months to keep it looking its best.

  • Wear old clothes when refinishing your teak furniture, as the cleaning solution will bleach your clothes.
