How to Clean Up Vinyl Adhesive
From applying vinyl tiles to a kitchen floor to repairing vinyl furnishings, you may have used a vinyl adhesive to complete the project. Vinyl adhesive is fast drying, not too difficult to work with, and is a challenge to remove if spilled. The key to cleaning up vinyl adhesive is speed and a cleaner that can break up the adhesive. You don't want to use a cleaner that will only remove part of the spilled vinyl adhesive. Does this Spark an idea?
Things You'll Need
- Bucket
- 1/2 gallon warm water
- Latex gloves
- 3 soft cloths
- Putty knife
- Acetone or mineral spirits
- Surgical or industrial mask

Fill a bucket with a ½ gallon of warm water. Wear latex gloves to keep your hands from getting wet.

Dip a soft cloth into the bucket of water. Wring out excess water.

Wipe up the vinyl adhesive with the damp cloth if you just spilled the adhesive. Re-dip the cloth in the water as needed. Continue wiping up the spilled vinyl adhesive and then skip to step 5.

Scrape the spilled vinyl adhesive gently with a putty knife, if the vinyl adhesive is dry. Hold the scraper at a 45 degree angle and use your fingers to pull the dry vinyl adhesive as you are scrapping it. Wipe the putty knife's blade frequently with a cloth.

Apply 2 tbsp. of acetone or mineral spirits to a soft cloth. Wring out excess acetone or mineral spirits into a bucket. Wear a mask during this step. Open a window or door to ventilate the area where you are cleaning up the vinyl adhesive.

Scrub the area where the vinyl adhesive spilled gently with the acetone- or mineral spirits-soaked cloth. Continue scrubbing the area until any remaining fragments of the vinyl adhesive are gone.

Wet a soft cloth with warm water from a sink.

Wipe the surface clean with the damp cloth where the spilled vinyl adhesive was.
