How to Hook Up a Philips TV to Sony Surround Sound

Philips television sets and Sony surround sound systems are equipped with a variety of connection jacks for compatibility with different types and brands of equipment. Newer Philips TVs and Sony systems have a High-Definition Multiedia Interface (HDMI) jack, which sends video and audio signals between components connected with a six-sided HDMI cable. Older Philips TVs and Sony surround sound receivers are equipped with component audio-video jacks for fast, color-coded connections. If both components have HDMI, use an HDMI cable for the best high-definition image. Component cables are the next-best option for hooking these two devices together.

Instructions

    • 1

Inspect the back panel of the Philips TV and the Sony surround sound receiver to see which types of connections are available. Look for a six-sided jack labeled "HDMI" with 19 holes set in three rows inside. If the TV and surround sound receiver both have HDMI jacks, got to Step 2. If not skip to Step 3.

    • 2

Insert the plug on one end of an HDMI cable into the "HDMI Out" jack on the Sony surround sound receiver with the wider end facing upward, and insert the other end in the same manner into the "HDMI In" jack on the Philips TV. The plug inserts with the wider end turned up; forcing it into the jack could break or bend the steel pins inside the plug.

    • 3

Connect the red, green and blue plugs on a set of RGB component video cables into the Sony receiver's color-coded "Component Video Out" jacks.

    • 4

Match the plugs on the other end to the colored "Video In" jacks on the Philips TV.

    • 5

Connect a set of white and red audio cables to the left and right "Audio Out" plugs on the Sony receiver and insert the other ends into the "Audio In" jacks on the Philips TV.

Tips & Warnings

  • Always use the red plug on the audio cable for the right-channel audio connection to avoid confusion and potentially crossed signals.

  • Unplug both components from the power source while connecting other cables.
