How to Design a Club House for a Cat

If you have ever watched a cat play in an old, discarded box, then you know how much fun they have in small, enclosed spaces. Cats have a strong sense of curiosity, as well as a desire for napping. Cat condos and cat clubhouses have become very popular with cat owners. These structures provide cats with room to play and rest. You can easily design your own cat clubhouse for your favorite feline.

Instructions

    • 1

Determine the activity level of your pet cat. Your cat condo needs to appeal to the personality of your cat. If you own more than one cat, you will need to design a versatile cat clubhouse to appeal to numerous characteristics.

    • 2

Gather the material you have on hand to recycle into a cat clubhouse. Find some sturdy cardboard boxes and old carpet remnants. Check with your newspaper office for free or inexpensive wooden shipping pallets. Ask around for lumber remnants and scraps. Make an inventory of all the supplies you have on hand.

    • 3

Select a location for the placement of your cat clubhouse. Find an area that is out of the way of daily traffic but close enough for your cat to enjoy your presence. Try to make some room near a sunny window. Determine how much floor space you will be able to allot for your cat's clubhouse.

    • 4

Draw up the design for your cat clubhouse. Provide multiple levels for climbing and resting. Include two or more platforms for sprawling, as well as one or two enclosed spaces for curling up. Make platforms large enough to allow the full length of your cat. Keep in mind that multiple cats often like to curl up together, and provide adequate space for them to share enclosures. Add an area for your cat's food and water bowls, if desired.

    • 5

Cover all surfaces of your new structure with your carpet remnants. Use a non-toxic carpet adhesive to join the back of the carpet to the surface of the cat clubhouse. Place your homemade cat condo in the selected location. Encourage your cat to explore it by placing tasty treats and fun toys within the new structure.

Tips & Warnings

  • Do not use old, painted wood for your cat clubhouse, unless you are certain the paint is free of lead.
