How to Take the Password Off for File Sharing in XP

If you have a password-protected shared folder on a Windows XP computer, you are aware of how tedious it can be to create an account and password on the computer for each user who has access to the folder. With all of the effort needed to maintain a password-protected folder, you may decide that you would rather give everyone access. Remove the password from a shared folder to allow anyone to access it using your computer's Guest account.

Instructions

    • 1

Right-click on the shared folder and click "Sharing and Security."

    • 2

Click the "Permissions" button under the "Sharing" tab.

    • 3

Confirm that "Everyone" is listed under "Group or user names." If it is not, click the "Add" button. In the window that opens, type "Everyone" and click "OK."

    • 4

With "Everyone" highlighted, confirm that the "Allow" box under "Read" is selected. This gives all users access to see your shared files but not to change or delete them.

    • 5

Click a user apart from "Everyone" on the "Group or user names" list. After clicking it, click "Remove." Repeat this process for each user except "Everyone."

    • 6

Click "OK" to close each window when "Everyone" is the only user remaining.

Tips & Warnings

  • If users are unable to access your shared folder after you remove the password, the Guest account on your computer may be disabled. Launch the User Options screen from the Control Panel to enable the Guest account.
