How to Disconnect a Wire Harness
There are many reasons why a person may need to disconnect a wire harness. Whether replacing a car stereo, disconnecting a component for removal or troubleshooting, or simply learning how to work with wire harnesses it is a good idea to know what you are doing before you begin because of the danger involved in working with electricity and electrical components.

Turn off any electricity that may be flowing through your wire harness. If working on a car, disconnect the battery.

Grasp both ends of the wire harness, one end in each hand. If your wire harness attaches directly into a secured unit, simply grasp the harness itself.

Unlatch any parts of the harness that lock together; you may need to examine the harness closely to see how it secures together.

Gently pull apart the wire harness.

Cover both ends of the harness with caps if available or use electrical tape. This will prevent unwanted electrical connections and keep they harness ends free of dirt and debris.

Never work on wiring that has current running through it.
