How to Adhere a Fabric Skirt to a Plastic Table
Plastic tables are inexpensive, durable and useful, but they do not always fit in with a room's decor. If you have a plastic table but you do not like the appearance of its legs, the easiest thing to do is cover the table with a fabric skirt. It is not always easy to attach a skirt to a plastic table, as you cannot just shoot staples into the plastic the way you could with other tables. The staples will not hold for very long, and then you have an uncovered plastic table with holes in it. Velcro is an easy and effective way to attach a skirt to your plastic table. Does this Spark an idea?
Things You'll Need
- Table skirt
- Ruler
- Tailor's chalk
- Straight pins
- Sew-on loop Velcro
- Threaded sewing machine
- Medium grit sandpaper
- Soft damp cloth or alcohol prep pad
- Adhesive backed hook Velcro
Instructions

1
Use the ruler to measure 1/4 inch down from the upper edge of the table skirt and make a small mark every 3 inches on the wrong side of the fabric.
-
2
Place the smooth side of the sew-on Velcro tape against the wrong side of the fabric. Do not use the adhesive backed Velcro on the fabric. It will stick to your needle and can even get inside of your sewing machine.

-
3
Align the top edge of the Velcro with the tailor's chalk marks and pin it to the skirt using the straight pins.
-
4
Lift the foot of the sewing machine and set the machine on a medium-length straight stitch.
-
5
Slide the skirt under the foot wrong side up. Sew all of the way around the skirt, attaching the Velcro on the top edge. Sewing the bottom edge of the Velcro is optional.
-
6
Use the sandpaper to scuff the outer rimmed edge of the plastic table where the skirt will be attached. Rub the sandpaper against the edge of the table using a smooth up and down motion.
-
7
Wipe the edge of the table with the soft damp cloth or the alcohol prep pad to remove any loose plastic particles from the surface.
-
8
Peel 1 foot of the covering off of the adhesive backed Velcro. Attach the Velcro to the table, lining up the upper edges of the table and the Velcro. When the first foot of Velcro is attached, peel another foot of covering off. It will be easiest to keep the Velcro straight if you work with small sections.
-
9
Align the top edge of the Velcro that is attached to the table skirt with the top edge of the adhesive backed Velcro.
