How to Connect My MP3 Player to My Car Auxiliary Jack

The MP3 player has revolutionized the way we listen to music. Gone are the days of lugging binders of CDs and bulky portable CD players to bring your favorite music with you. The convenience of MP3 players doesn't translate as well to the car, however. Most players don't have a speaker loud enough to drown out the sounds of the road and using your headphones isn't safe and is illegal in some places. To combat these issues, many car stereo makers have started including an auxiliary jack so you can connect your MP3 player to your stereo and play your music over your car speakers.

Things You'll Need

Insert the other end of the 3.5mm audio cable into the headphone jack on your MP3 player.

    • 3

Press the "Aux," "Source" or "Function" button on your car stereo until the display on your stereo reads "Audio In," "Aux In" or something similar to that.

    • 4

Turn your MP3 player on and control it as you would if you were listening through your headphones.

Tips & Warnings

  • Which button you press to select your MP3 player and what your car stereo display reads when it is ready to play will vary according to the manufacturer.

  • Connecting your MP3 player to your stereo will not charge your MP3 player or keep it charged. If you are going to be away from your home charger for a while you may want to purchase a car charger to keep your player charged during your drive.
