How to Change a Horizon Fitness Treadmill Belt

Treadmills require maintenance and sometimes replacement parts just like all other machines. Over time parts wear out and oil needs replenishing. Replacing the treadmill belt is inevitable if it is being used regularly. There are many manufacturers that sell parts and belts online as well as in retail fitness stores. Depending on the model of the Horizon treadmill, belts range from $100 to $200. Materials, size and durability affect the price of a replacement belt.

Instructions

    • 1

Unplug the treadmill to avoid shock or static discharge. Leaving the treadmill plugged in while performing maintenance is a safety hazard.

    • 2

Remove the side rails of the treadmill. Use a Phillips head screwdriver to remove the three or four screws in each rail. Some models use Allen head screws.

    • 3

Use the Allen wrench to remove the tensioner bolt that tightens the rollers of the treadmill. The rollers guide the belt and allow the belt to spin on the deck. With the bolt removed on the rear roller, slide the roller forward to the front of the treadmill.

    • 4

Loosen the tensioner bolt on the front roller and remove the security bar from the front roller. This bar allows you to remove the belt. Remove the belt and clean the deck of the treadmill with a clean cloth.

    • 5

Oil the deck of the treadmill before placing the new belt into position. Do not cover the entire surface because once the belt is turned on the oil will be spread.

    • 6

Place the new belt around both the front and rear roller. Slide the rollers into position and tighten down the tensioner bolts.

    • 7

Plug the treadmill into an electrical source and run the belt at 2 mph. This step has two purposes. The first is to spread the oil on the deck of the treadmill. The second is to test the belt and make sure it operates properly. Center the belt as needed by using the Allen wrench on the rear of the right-side rail. There is one bolt on the rail that can be turned left or right to shift the pattern of the belt on the rollers.

Reattach the side rails with the Phillips head screws that hold the rails to the treadmill.
