How to Figure Gain & Loss From a Stock Portfolio
Changes in the market and your personal life might dictate how a stock portfolio should be managed. You may find it necessary to modify your risk or the diversification of your investments. If you know the initial purchase price of each stock, the number of shares owned, and the current stock price, you can calculate the gain or loss from a stock portfolio.
Instructions
-
Compute Initial Value
-
1
Identify the stocks and ticker symbols of the investments you own.
-
2
Identify the number of shares owned for each stock. This value can be found on the documentation produced when the stock was purchased.
-
-
3
Identify the total purchase price of the shares purchased for each stock. This value can most likely be found on the original stock documentation. If not, multiply the number of shares purchased by the stock purchase price located on the stock documentation to calculate total purchase price for each stock.
-
4
Add the purchase prices of all stocks.
Calculate Gain/Loss
