How to Fix the Ring of Fire on an Xbox 360
While it's no doubt many gamers adore their XBox 360s, the "Red Ring of Fire" or the "Red Ring of Death," as it's also commonly known, is a source of frustration. The normally welcoming green lights are divided into four quadrants to make the circle, and when any one (or all) flash red, something has gone wrong with the console's hardware. Thankfully, there's steps to take when one experiences the dreaded red lights.

1
Unplug the XBox 360 console from its power source and remove all attached cords, then set the cords aside.
-
2
Using a clean and dry cloth, wipe away dust buildup on the console's vents and peripheral attachment sites. Allow the console to cool completely to the touch. Reattach all the cords and power up the system to see if the rings return. If the lights are green, place the console in a better ventilated place to avoid overheating.

Visually inspect the cable attachments if the ring is flashing red in all four areas (thus forming a complete red ring). Gently push on the attached cords to see if a proper and secure connection is being made between the system and its power source. The red lights may indicate the need for a new power cord.

Check the system's included paperwork to determine of the XBox 360's manufacturer's warranty is still valid . Register your console online at Microsoft Customer Support's website. Some degree of out-of-pocket expense is expected for expired warranties. However, if the system registered an "E74" error, the repair service is free of charge. Ship your XBox per the instructions given on the website's prompts.

Tips & Warnings
Attempting to fix the console yourself (via the "towel method") voids any current warranty and may further damage the system.
