How to Format a Blank CD-R Disc

Whether your machine came with a CD-R drive or you just purchased one, to write to the disc you first must format it. When you insert a blank CD-R disc into the drive, Microsoft Windows automatically prompts you for a name and file system to format the CD-R. The wizard guides you through the process. Once you are finished, the disc can be used to back up files, installation packages and images.

1. Insert a blank CD-R disc into the drive. After the CD-R is detected, Microsoft Windows opens a new window to format the disc.

2. Select "Burn files to disc" to start the wizard. The first screen asks you for a name for the CD-R. The name is displayed in "My Computer" when you insert the CD-R in the future. Click the "Next" button.

3. Select the type of file system. The two choices are "Live" and "Mastered." Live file system allows you to use the CD similar to a hard drive. You can save the files one-by-one as you need the disk. Mastered allows you to burn to the CD-R only once. You copy over all the files you want to save and commit to the burn process.

4. Click the "Next" button. It may take several minutes for the computer to format the disc. Once the format process is finished, you can save files to the CD-R.

Tips & Warnings

• The Live file system is supported only in Windows XP and newer operating systems.
