How to Control Skype

Skype is a popular voice-over-IP, or VoIP, program that allows you to call land lines, cell phones and other VoIP users from the comfort of your computer. If you are new to Skype, it may seem a little daunting. However, the program is designed to be intuitive, and learning how to make and receive calls using the Skype software may become second nature.

      Create your Skype friends list. If you know other people on Skype, you can add them by pressing the "New" button at the top left of the screen, then selecting "New Contact." Enter the friend's contact information, and Skype will add him to your "Buddy List" on the left side of the screen.

      Call friends. To call someone on your list, simply click on a name, then press the green "Call" button at the top of the screen.

      Call regular phones. In addition to calling people on Skype, you can also call land lines and cell phones. Click on the "Call Phones" tab in the sidebar. A keypad will appear on the right side of the screen. Type in the number, then hit "Call." Be aware that while calling other computers is free, there are charges associated with calling regular phones.

      Adjust settings. If the person you are talking to can't hear you or you are experiencing feedback, go to the "Call" menu at the top of the page and select "Audio Settings." Adjust the input device, toggle the volume for the headset and the microphone, and modify sound card settings.

  • In order for Skype to form successful connections with other computer or telephone users, it is necessary to have a high-speed Internet connection, such as DSL or cable.
