Place shingle upside down with the back of the shingle facing toward you.

Place a yardstick or a straight metal piece alongside the area you want to cut and mark it with the utility knife.

Cut along the marking. If the knife does not go completely through the shingle, fold back and forth along the cut until the shingle comes apart.
