How To Dress Up the Wall With Curtains
Curtains have more applications than just hanging out in front of a window---they can be used to decorate walls, adding depth and color to a room. Using curtains to dress up your walls has the distinct advantage of being completely removable for people who rent their homes or just change their minds a lot. Plus, curtains can cover up unattractive holes or cracks until you or your landlord has a chance to fix them. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Measure your walls before you go curtain shopping or purchase fabric to make curtains. Your curtains do not have to cover the entire wall, but one that falls just a little bit short will look tacky.
-
2
Choose your fabric. Sheer curtains will help a room feel lighter, but will show the underlying wall through them. Heavy curtains, such as velvet, can help dampen sounds and make a room feel warmer, but can also make a room feel smaller.

3
Find a pattern and color that coordinates with your room. A fun pattern can brighten up plain walls, but patterned curtains will not look appropriate on busy wallpaper. Curtains should contrast with the surrounding décor---use light curtains to brighten dark walls and vice versa.
-
4
Design your walls. Large walls can be broken up with several curtains--floor-to-ceiling curtains that are 3 or 4 feet wide, alternating between curtain and wall. Smaller walls can be covered with one curtain. Curtains can be hung behind the bed or as a backdrop to other furniture.

5
Hang the curtains. Heavy drapery will need to be supported by appropriate curtain rods, but lighter, sheer curtains can be hung with nails or tacks.
