E-Decorating is a way of working with an interior designer virtually or remotely. Virtual interior design services provide design solutions to anyone, anywhere. Most of the work is provided electronically (via computer/internet) and the client can use the help of the interior designer as little or as much as needed. Many designers are providing e-decorating services these days and they can be very advantageous to a client - for one, if you like a certain style of a designer in another city you can engage their services by working remotely with that particular designer. Virtual interior design services often times provide interior design services at a more affordable rate than the traditional methods of hiring an interior design. The first step to using e-decorating is finding a designer who offers virtual design services who's work you admire and one that features a package incentive that appeals to you.

Once you decide on a designer you want to work with remotely, that particular designer may request certain items from you. When I am putting together a complete room package for a virtual client, I request they email or fax the room dimensions (overall dimensions along with distances between doors, windows, anything that is built-in to the wall, etc) along with dimensions of their existing furnishings they wish to incorporate into the new scheme of things along with pictures of the room and furniture. It's also helpful to email pictures of adjacent rooms so that I can view the flow of one room to the next. I love putting together complete concepts but if the client has very particular style or taste, then it's helpful for the client to email pictures or links to a look or item they like. It's also essential to include a list of likes/dislikes - especially when it comes to colors.

Once the client has forwarded room dimensions, pictures, etc to the designer - the design process begins. Most e-decorating services include: a furniture floor plan, furnishings selections, paint color chips, finish colors & materials, a concept board, and a resource list to shop from. Depending on how the designer works, the turnaround time can take anywhere from 1-3 weeks.

The designer will then email all items electronically to the client for review along with explanations. (Some designers do mail a package, I typically order color swatches to be sent to the client.) This gives the client an opportunity to review at leisure (reply back with any questions) and implement the design scheme at their convenience. It's a great starting point to give any challenging room direction by providing the client with all the steps they need to proceed with their project. E-Decorating can be a great service for anyone who needs inspiration and design help but may be on a budget.

Tips & Warnings
Make sure the designer allows for follow up questions (by phone or email) and is available if you have questions once you receive your virtual design package.
E-Decorating is ideal for the client who is on a budget but can implement the room design on their own (by using the plan and concepts provided by the designer).
