How to Download the Microsoft Office Excel Analysis ToolPak

Excel, part of Microsoft's popular Office software package, is an excellent spreadsheet program for data storage and management. Adding the Analysis ToolPak expands Excel's capabilities, making it a powerful data analysis tool capable of calculating descriptive statistics and correlations as well as conducting a range of statistical analyses, including analysis of variance, significance testing and even multivariate regression. Adding this feature to Excel does not require downloading from another website; you merely have to load the tool from Excel's menu of supplemental programs known as add-ins.

Instructions

  1. Loading the Analysis ToolPak in Excel 2007

      Open Excel and click the "Microsoft Office" button, located near the top left corner of the Excel spreadsheet. This button allows you to access a variety of features in this new version of Microsoft Office, including the "Excel Add-ins" menu.

      Click "Excel Options" after clicking the "Microsoft Office" button. After clicking Excel Optioins, select "Excel Add-ins." Doing so will open a new window showing the available add-ins for Excel. Select "Analysis ToolPak" by clicking the adjacent check box. After doing this, click "OK." This will add the Data Analysis tool for use.

      Check to ensure the Data Analysis tool has been loaded by clicking the "Data" tab at the top of the Excel spreadsheet and choosing the "Analysis" group. The Data Analysis tool should appear there, ready for use.

      Open Excel and click the "Tools" menu, located in the toolbar at the top of the Excel file. This opens a drop-down menu.

      Select "Add-Ins" from the options in the "Tools" menu. This will open a new window of available add-ins. Select "Analysis ToolPak" by clicking the adjacent check box. After doing this, click "OK." This will load the data analysis option into the "Tools" menu in Excel.

      Click the "Tools" menu again and ensure the Analysis ToolPak has been installed. "Data Analysis" should appear in the "Tools" menu. If it does, then the Data Analysis tool is ready for use.

Tips & Warnings

  • If the Analysis ToolPak does not appear in the available add-ins menu (whether in Excel 2007 or an earlier version of the program), click "Browse" to locate and load it for use.

    Prior to performing Principal Components Analysis or a Factor Analysis it is advisable to compute the Kaiser-Meyer-Olkin Index (KMO) of Sampling Adequacy and Bartlett's Sphericity. If these tests do not demonstrate factorable data, there is no need to perform PCA or FA. Where does the Analysis ToolPak compute the KMO?
