How to Become a Social Work Counselor

Social work can be an emotionally rewarding career. You will be in a career that, unlike most others, is entirely devoted to helping others improve their lives. Social workers provide a range of services, from helping abused children to assisting people with drug and alcohol addictions. While entering the field isn't difficult, it can be time-consuming; it requires a four-year degree and state licensing. If you enjoy helping people, that investment of time may well be worth it.

Instructions

    • 1

Look into educational possibilities. Social work degrees can be earned either in a traditional classroom setting or online. Explore both local educational opportunities and distance education programs. Because this field will require state licensing, be sure to study through an accredited institution.

    • 2

Apply for admission to the school of your choice and await its admission. Distance education programs often have less stringent admission policies than brick-and-mortar colleges and allow you to begin taking classes immediately.

    • 3

Complete your degree requirements. After you have finished all the required coursework, you will need to take a state licensing exam. Arrange to do so as soon as it is allowed. The results may be made available to you for six to eight weeks, and you will need your license before you begin working.

    • 4

Get a job. As soon as you have made arrangements to graduate and take any licensing exams, you can begin looking for a job. Note on your resume you expect to receive your degree and license.
