How to Customize Photos With Magazine Covers

It is fairly easy to create a magazine cover with a photo using Adobe Illustrator, which provides a wide variety of rich text and fonts. Use a nice thick font since it looks better in the final display and is best for gradients and textures, if desired.
Choose a photo that is at least two mega-pixels to four mega-pixels .jpg or Adobe Illustrator format. The flexibility of Adobe Illustrator's text editing features allows for some very creative designs for magazine covers.

Instructions

    • 1

In Adobe Illustrator, open a new document (Ctrl+N), and choose a size. A good size to use is 612pixels by 792 pixel (8.5 inches by 11.0 inches).

    • 2

Choose the text and font you will be using.

You can do this by clicking Type > Font from the menu and selecting the font style you wish. This should be the type logo and associated subheadings for your front cover magazine.
Click Shift+Ctrl+B to toggle the bounding box.

    • 3

      Vary the chosen font effects.

With the Selection Tool, select your type. You may want to ensure the text you've chosen is surrounded by a boundary for re-sizing.

    • 4

With the type selected, choose Type > Create Outlines from the Menu.
This will allow re-sizing and coloring of your selection.

    • 5

Use the cursor to drag any of the corners of the bounded text to the size you wish. Use the color picker to choose your font color. You can also pick a gradient and texture for different effects.

    • 6

Bring your photos or images to the document.

Drag the selection into the new document.

You can also use the "Place" command from the File drop-down options on the menu.

    • 7

Select the image with the Selection Tool and from the menu, click Object > Arrange > Send to Back. This will place your image behind the text.

    • 8

Using the Selection Tool, re-arrange your text boxes and re-size your designs.
