How to Install an Old Bicycle Speedometer

Bicycle speedometers are simple electronic devices that count wheel rotations per minute to determine your riding speed. Most speedometers also act as odometers to track distance, helping you determine mileage for your workouts.

Things You'll Need

• Bar end handles (optional)
• Bike
• Speedometer kit
• Zip ties

1. Consider purchasing and installing bar end handles, which extend out from the horizontal bar. They will help to protect your speedometer if you crash.

2. Attach the speedometer wire to the handle bar near the mount using a zip tie, allowing for a small amount of slack.

3. Run the wire down the frame of the bike, and behind the front shock, using zip ties.

4. Attach the detection wand using the mounting clip so that it's on the inside of the fork for the front tire, on the rear side of the fork. Make sure it's angled downward slightly, approximately six inches from the wheel hub.

5. Attach the magnet to the spokes of the bike so that it passes the wand about one quarter-inch from the end of the wand when the bike wheel is rotating.
