How to Find a Removed Web Page
You might be looking for a page you've visited before and can't find now. Or you might be using a search engine and, when you click on one of the results, you get a message that says the page you clicked on is not found. If the page has been moved or deleted, you have a couple of options to find it again.
Instructions
-
Search Engine Cached Pages
-
1
Click on a website link in a search engine such as Google. If doing this creates a 'web page not found' error, follow the steps below to see an archived version of the page.
-
2
Look on the search engine results page for a link labeled "Cached." This will be at the end of the listing, after the website URL link.
-
-
3
Click on the "Cached" link to see the page.
Be aware that this option only works for a page that was indexed by the search engine and then recently removed, usually within the past three months. If the site owner requested the page removed from the index, it won't be available in this way.
Internet Archiving Websites
-
4
Visit an Internet archive website. The most well-known and complete is called the Wayback Machine, run by the Internet Archive. Others include Archive-It Collections and WebCite. See links in the References and Resources sections below.
-
5
Enter the website URL or choose from a list of websites. You can also use advanced search functions to enter a date. Click on the search button.
-
6
Choose from the list of search results.
-
7
Return to the main page, if the results were not what you wanted. Change what you input, by narrowing the date range or by using a more specific URL.
Site Map on a Still Existing Website
-
8
Look elsewhere on a website for a specific page you can no longer find. Do this by clicking on the "Home" button or deleting the part of the URL after the ".com" part. This works if you are looking for a specific page which has been moved, while the rest of the website is still active. The website may have been reorganized recently.
-
9
Use the website's navigation system to look for the topic you are interested in. Read the menus and click on the closest match. Look for a Site Map to help you find it, if there is one.
-
10
Use the website search function to see if you can find the page you need, if none of the above steps generated results.
