How to Check How Low the Color Is on a Printer
Your color printer is only as good as its ink cartridges, so if you have a lot of printing to do it is important to make sure you have enough ink to complete the job. Having a couple of extra color ink cartridges on hand is always a good idea as well, since those color cartridges tend to run out a lot more quickly than their black counterparts. Checking to see how low the color is on a printer can be accomplished in a few simple steps.

1
Print a test page by clicking on "Start," choosing "Settings" and then "Printers and Faxes." Right-click on your printer and choose "Properties," then click "Print Test Page." This will send a full-color test page to your printer.
-
2
Examine the test page carefully, looking in particular at the colors on the page. If any of the colors appear faded, your color cartridge probably needs to be replaced. If your printer uses a separate cartridge for each color you can just replace that color, otherwise you will need to purchase a whole new color printer cartridge.

Lift the top of your printer and wait for the print cartridges to come to the center. Look for an indicator on the front of the cartridge. This indicator will show you the ink level remaining in the cartridge. The exact location of this ink level gauge varies from manufacturer to manufacturer, so it helps to consult the user guide that came with your printer.

4
Open up the software that came with your printer to determine if you can check the ink levels that way. The utilities included with many popular printers allow users to check the levels of both color and black inks right from the desktop.
