How to Sew Barstool Cushions

Simple home decor projects can transform a room's style and make it uniquely your own. Sewing barstool cushions are one of those projects. Cushions can be made to dress up plain, newly purchased bar stools or to replace the worn cushions on flea market finds. Use heavy-duty upholstery fabric or recycle clothing, vintage bedspreads or blankets to sew barstool cushions for everyday use or make several sets for different holidays and the changing seasons.

Instructions

    • 1

Lay a sheet of newspaper on your work surface. Turn a round backless barstool upside down and place it on the paper. Draw around the seat of the bar stool using a pencil, and remove the stool.

    • 2

Use a ruler to measure out from the circle shape 4 inches on all sides and mark, creating a circle approximately 21 inches in diameter. Cut out the shape. This is the pattern for the barstool cushion. The excess on the edges will wrap under the seat when finished.

    • 3

Fold a 2/3-yard length of fabric into two layers with the right sides together. Place the pattern on the fabric and pin it through both layers. Cut the fabric around the shape and remove the pattern.

    • 4

Pin the fabric circles together around the edges. Sew around the pinned edges using a 1/2-inch seam allowance and leaving a 3-inch opening for turning and stuffing. Trim the seam to 1/4 inch.

    • 5

Turn the cushion case right-side out and press. Lay the case on your work surface. Place the barstool upside down on the case and center it. Draw around the stool seat using tailor's chalk or a disappearing ink pen. Remove the stool.

    • 6

Pin the center layers of the circle together. Topstitch on the marked circle leaving a 3-inch opening on the same side of the case as the outer 3-inch opening. This stitched circle will create an inner pocket for the stuffing of the cushion.

    • 7

Insert stuffing through the outer opening in the case and through the opening of the inner pocket. Continue until the inner pocket is the desired firmness. Note: Do not stuff the outer ring of the case. Pin the unsewn section of the inner pocket together and topstitch it closed.

    • 8

Topstitch around the outer edge of the sewn cushion case, 1 inch from the edge. This will create a channel for a drawstring. Attach a safety pin to one end of a 36-inch shoestring. Using the safety pin as a guide, thread the shoestring through the channel leaving equal lengths of tails exposed at the opening.

    • 9

Topstitch as close to the edge of the cushion case as possible, leaving a 1-inch opening to draw up the shoestring tails. Place the cushion on the barstool seat. Pull the shoestring tails, gathering the edge of the cushion under the stool seat. Tie the string into a bow to secure.
