How to Make Gazing Balls
Gazing balls are pure beauty with a bit of magic. They bring a touch of whimsy to the garden. It is possible to make your own small gazing ball for a fairy garden. After you set it out, you never know when you might catch a "fairy" gazing at herself in it. Does this Spark an idea?
Things You'll Need
- 3" silver glass Christmas ball
- 4" terra cotta pot
- 1.5" terra cotta pot
- 2.5" terra cotta saucer
- Soil
- Moss
- White acrylic paint
- Small sponge
- Pliers
- Strong glue
Instructions
-
-
1
Using the pliers, carefully remove the hanging apparatus from the Christmas ball.
-
2
Apply paint with the sponge to the terra cotta pieces. Don't cover the whole surface; instead sponge the paint strategically. Try for an aged look. Excess paint can be blotted off with a soft cloth. Let the terra cotta dry. If you have aged terra cotta, you can skip this step.

3
Turn the larger pot upside down, glue the saucer right-side up on top of it, and then the smaller pot right-side up on top of that. Let the glue dry.
-
4
Plant the moss in the saucer. An alternative to real moss would be dried moss sold in florist shops.
-
5
Put the Christmas ball in the smaller pot, open end down.
-
6
Set your new gazing ball in the garden for the "fairies" (and you) to enjoy.

Tips & Warnings
If you use live moss, make sure it regularly gets a little water.
Keep a stash of leftover Christmas balls so that you can replace the ball if it starts to lose it's paint in the elements.
