How to Repair Heat Registers

The heat registers in your home direct the flow of air in the room. Over time the fins may become loose and start to make an annoying rattling every time the furnace turns on. The only way to repair noisy or broken heat registers is to replace them. The design of heat registers prevents any kind of meaningful repair. You will need to remove the register and measure the opening for a replacement. Most big box hardware stores carry replacement heat registers. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off the circuit breaker to the HVAC unit or furnace. Remove the two screws securing the heat register to the heat duct boot with a flathead screwdriver. Pull the broken heat register away from the heat duct.

    • 2

Measure the heat duct opening width and length with a tape measure. Take the measurement and the existing heat register with you to the hardware store. Purchase a heat register that will fit the opening measurements of the heat duct opening. Match the design as close as possible to your current heat register unless you plan on replacing all of the registers in the room.

    • 3

Clean away any dirt and debris from the heat duct opening. Use a vacuum to clean the inside of the duct.

    • 4

Place the new heat register into the heat duct boot. Drill holes into the heat duct boot from the attaching holes in the side of the heat register. Use a drill bit that is smaller in diameter than the securing screws.

    • 5

Secure the heat register to the heat duct boot with sheet metal screws and a cordless screwdriver. Turn the circuit breaker back on to the furnace or HVAC unit.
