How to Hook Up a Laptop to a Printer Without Its Software
If you have lost or misplaced the software that came with your printer, you may think that it will be impossible to connect that printer to your laptop. The good news is that you will in fact be able to connect the printer--you just need to take a few easy steps first.

Log on to your computer and navigate to the website of your printer manufacturer. Click on the "Support and Drivers" part of the website and locate a printer driver for your operating system.

Connect the square end of the USB cable to the back of your printer, then connect the flat end of the cable to a free USB port on your computer. Plug the printer in and power it on.

Watch the lower right-hand corner of your screen for the "Found New Hardware" message. This is your indication that the operating system has found the printer and is installing the software for it.

Click on the "Start" button, choose "Settings" and point to "Printers and Faxes." Look for the printer to be listed. If it is not there, run the installation program you downloaded from the manufacturer.
